Improving the speaking ability of the eight graders at MTs. Miftahul Falah Purwwodadi Pasuruan East Java using picture / Eva Ratnawati

Abstrak
Key words speaking pictures narrative This study was conducted to improve the speaking ability of the eight graders at MTs. Miftahul Falah Purwodadi Pasuruan East Java. The pictures were proposed in the teaching of speaking because they were attracting and interesting especially for narrative texts and story-telling. Some previous studies found that a picture is able to stimulate the students to be more actively involved in speaking activity so their speaking skill can be improved. This study used a collaborative classroom action research design. The researcher and her collaborative teacher worked together in designing the lesson plan setting the criteria of success implementing the action observing the action and having reflection. The subjects of this study were VIII students of MTs.Miftahul Falah Purwodadi Pasuruan East Java of the 2011/2012 academic year. This study was conducted by following the procedures of the action research i.e. planning implementing observing and reflecting. The main activities of the teaching and learning process were Warm-up and Pre-speaking activities Whilst-speaking Activities and Post-speaking activities and Follow-up. In Warm-up and Pre-speaking activities the students were given a narrative text and a set of pictures related to the text. Then they were asked to analyze the generic structure language features and verb 2 after the researcher gave a modelling how to perform a story based on the pictures. On the next meeting the students were given jumbled pictures and sentences and asked to match and arrange them into a text then they were asked to perform story orally. The result of the study showed that the use of pictures in telling story can improve the students ability in speaking. The percentage of the students achieving the score above predetermined minimum passing grade (KKM) had improved from only 16.66% (4 students out of 24 students) in the preliminary study to 50% (12 students out of 24 students) in Cycle 1 and to 85.83% (23 students out of 24 students) in Cycle 2. Besides the mean scores of each aspect fluency grammar pronunciation vocabulary confidence also increased. Based on the findings of the study it is suggested to English teachers to use pictures in the speaking class. For further researchers they are suggested that it would be better to do more than one preliminary study in order to identify the problems more accurately.
