The teaching of english at SDN Sumbersarfi 1 Malang / Agus Irawan

Abstrak
Key Words inclusive classroom material media teaching and learning activities This study aims at investigating the teaching and learning of English at SDN Sumbersari 1 as one of the inclusive elementary schools in Malang. Every class in this school accommodates a number of students with special needs of learning disabilities. More specifically this study seeks to find out the material media and teaching and learning activities used in the English classroom and the students response toward the English teaching. According to Richards (2001 in Emi 2011) teaching materials are a key component in most language programs which generally serve as the basis for the frequency of the language input that the learners gain in the classroom. Instructional media are needed to support the delivery of teaching materials. Suyanto (2006 21) classified instructional media into three types that is (1) visual media (2) audio media and (3) audio visual media teaching techniques usually used by a teacher in the classroom of young learners include (1) listen and do (2) question and answer (3) work pair and group work (4) brainstorming and (5) modeling and demonstration (Richard and Rodgers 2001 in Emi 2011) This study is a qualitative research. The subjects are the English teacher of the fourth grade and her students. The data related to the research problems are collected though observations and teacher s interviews. It was found that the teacher used one textbook as the material in the English class. She considered the textbook easy and suitable enough for the students. The media used by the teacher were whiteboard textbook and real objects. These media were to help focus the students attention and to help them understand the lesson. The learning activities carried out in the classroom include listen and do question and answer brainstorming modeling and demonstration. In general the students seemed to be enthusiastic in following the lesson and in participating in the classroom activities. The inclusive students were also involved in the activities to some extent. It is suggested that the teacher use more varied materials and media to make the lesson more interesting and resourceful.
