A Ball for \'B\' juveniles: the social-mobility and constraint toward African-Americans through representation in gridiron gang, a sport movie / Nindia Kirana Windu Sari

Sari, Nindia Kirana Windu - Nama Orang;

Abstrak
Keywords African-Americans social-mobility and constraint representation sport American football Gridiron Gang In this supposed post-colonial society African-Americans (Afro- Americans) have more social-mobility access in sports. Nevertheless they are still often constrained by the representation made by the media and society for them. Through representation maintained in sport the identity of Afro-Americans is (re)constructed to have sport as their exclusive mobility access. Thus the notion of a ball for B kids fills its notion as Black and Bad juveniles are given ball (sports) instead of books. This phenomenon can be found in one popular Hollywood movie Gridiron Gang (2006). However the attempt is mystified as the racial inequality has been hidden in the mythical or interpretative level of reading. It is because the movie has positioned itself differently among other mainstream sport movies invoking Afro- Americans in which racial inequality incorporated in the plots. The mystification attempt is working together with the fluid identity in the minority ethnic group or Others in order to maintain racial inequality. The fluid identity is represented through social-mobility and constraint through the Others representation in the form of the paradox of identity between Afro-Americans and Caucasians (manichean allegory) and within Afro-Americans. Both of them circulate around the binary code of recognition in contrast values toward Afro-Americans as the positive values are asserted along with the negative values. The pattern of the manichean allegory in Gridiron Gang are not intelligent vs. intelligent deviant masculine vs. masculine and violent vs. not violent while the paradox of identity within Afro-Americans are athletic but not intelligent athletic but violent and masculine but also childish. At last Gridiron Gang and the main character of coach which seemingly participated in the maintenance of boundaries through plot engaged in negotiating the inequality apparently they also helped in the establishment and the maintenance of those boundaries for the other characters and the viewers.
