Keywords slang comic strip and Candorville. The use of slang is now captured and popularized by some mass media including comic strip. One of the comic strips that contains slang is Candorvile. This study is aimed at knowing the slang words found in Candorville comic strip and their meanings. Also this study is eager to know the social motives behind its use. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative. To collect the data the researcher firstly read all episodes of Candorville comic strip from May 2011 to May 2012 to select only titles that contain slang words and expressions. Having collected the data the researcher provided the meaning of the slang words and expressions and then analyzed them by categorizing them into several possible motives. Finally the researcher explained the motives behind the use of slang by the characters in Candorville comic strip. The empirical study that has been done to answer the research problems showed several results. It displayed that there were 56 strips which contained 57 slang words and expressions within. Later on the data analysis demonstrated that there were multiple motives why the characters in Candorville used those slang lexical items. There are nine social motives identified in the use of slang words in Candorville comic strip. The three out of total nine motives are based on theory of slang by Eric Partridge (1934). Those are to make fun or humorous effect to shorten words and to make a secret code. Some other social motives are in line with the result of some sociolinguists in their research including to regulate social interaction by using some particular words for purposes such as greetings (Bembe and Beukes 2007) to signal coolness and engagement of youth culture (Bucholtz 2001) and to reduce seriousness (Richter 2006). It is also worth pointing that the remaining social motives are new findings in this study i.e. to substitute for taboo words to mark black identity and to establish solidarity and to mock or ridicule someone. The researcher suggests that the students of English Department read this thesis to get more understanding and knowledge about slang. Also it is suggested that the lecturers of sociolinguistics embrace slang as an interesting subject matter of sociolinguistics by bringing it into the classroom so that the students can expand their insight of language particularly in socio-cultural context. The result of this thesis could be a useful reference for the readers who have special interest in slang. The researcher suggests that future researchers uncover other social motives for using slang as well as draw more attention and conduct further interesting discussion or research related to the study of slang. A future study on slang should deal with sociolinguistics interwined with other subfields of linguistics.
