Abstrak
Key words teaching reading three-phase technique. This study aimed at investigating the implementation of three-phase technique in teaching reading to junior high students. The research problem was how the three-phase technique was implemented in the teaching and learning of reading at SMPN 5 Malang. The study employed a qualitative-descriptive approach. This study was conducted in one 8th grade class of RSBI II at SMPN 5 Malang. The subjects of the study were 28 eighth grade students in the first semester. The data sources included field-notes interview answers and questionnaire results. The data were collected through three observations written in field notes follow-up questions in teacher s interview and teacher and student questionnaires. The data were then classified and analyzed based on the strategies in three-phase technique by Duplass (2005) McNeil (1992) and Cahyono (1993) The findings showed that there were various strategies that teachers used in the pre-reading phase. At the beginning of the class the teacher introduced the text they were going to discuss and discussed some vocabularies related to the text. The teacher also showed some slides related to the topic moreover she gave some open-ended questions to build curiosity of the students about the passage they were going to discuss. In while-reading phase the teacher played the videos. During the playing of the video the students responded to do silent reading in which the students were paying close attention to the video and making some notes about the story. The teacher also asked the students to do round-robin reading. Moreover the teacher asked the students to answer open-ended questions on the module that followed the passage in the post-reading phase. Besides there were also True/False questions given by the teacher. The students were allowed to discuss the questions in groups. The teacher then asked them to exchange and check the work together. At last the teacher assigned the students to summarize the story. This study will be useful for future researchers who would like to carry out studies on similar topics. The future researchers who want to conduct other studies that relate to three-phase technique in teaching reading comprehension are suggested to analyze deeper in the effectiveness of the strategies in three-phase technique in improving the students reading comprehension.
