Implementing shared writing strategy to improve the ability of tenth graders of SMPN 1 Pandaan in writing report text / Dia Novi Nur Aini

Abstrak
Key words shared writing strategy writing ability report text Based on the result of a preliminary study conducted at SMPN I Pandaan the researcher found some problems related to the English teaching - learning process especially in writing. Those were first most of the students scores on writing are still under the minimum passing criteria or Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum (KKM). The minimum passing criteria is 75 while only ten students out of fourty students have scores above the minimum passing criteria. The second problem was students often found difficult in starting writing. They get confused in expressing their idea in a written form. Moreover the students were usually afraid of making mistakes because of the different concept of sentence structure between English and Indonesian. Therefore the researcher is greatly motivated to overcome the problems by implementing shared writing strategy to improve the ability of the ninth graders of SMPN I Pandaan in writing report text. This study was intended to know how shared writing strategy can improve the ninth graders of SMPN I Pandaan in writing a report text. The research problem formulated in this study was How can shared writing strategy improve the ability of the ninth graders of SMPN I Pandaan in writing report text The design of the study was collaborative classroom action research in which the researcher was assisted by a collaborator in designing lesson plan determining the criteria of success implementing and observing the actions making reflection on the data obtained from the teaching and learning process. The action research was conducted through the following procedure (1) planning of the action (2) implementing of the action (3) observing the action and (4) analyzing and reflecting. The subjects of the study were the ninth graders of SMPN I Pandaan at the first semester in 2012-2013 academic year. The number of the students in the class was 40 students. The instruments used in this study were observation checklists and questionnaire field notes writing test and scoring rubric. The steps of shared writing strategy in the teaching of writing report texts encompasses five steps. They are planning composing revising editing and publishing. In planning stage the teacher and students discussed the topic activated students background knowledge by showing pictures or slides related to the topic besides equipped students with some exercises concerning with the language features of report text. In the first cycle the teacher prepared a worksheet which aimed to help them to identify the verb pattern of simple present tense. The next stage was composing. In this stage the teacher provided a model text to the students by doing shared writing. The process of shared writing enabled students to involve in providing the model text. Before composed report text together teacher showed pictures in order to make them interested and easier in answering the leading questions. The teacher needed to prepare some guided questions in order to prompt students ideas in the form of simple present tense sentences. Teacher acted as a scribe by writing down the students sentences on board. Then help students to elaborate the ideas into the paragraph of report text . This process enabled students to have verbal interaction and negotiation with the teacher. The next stage was revising. In this stage teacher and students critically analyze the text constructed and modified it by rereading the text to discussed what need to be written next or to monitored whether or not the text conveys information clearly. Then editing stage where teacher and students discussed together whether appropriate language features such as spelling grammar and punctuation have been used to link ideas and whether the text is likely engage its intended audience. The last was publishing stage. In this stage students posted the text that they made together in an accessible spot in the classroom. This study was conducted in two Cycles each of which consisted of four meetings. In Cycle 1 meeting 1 was the planning. It was done on October 8th 2012. Meeting 2 was composing revising editing and publishing with the teacher be a scribe . It was done on October 9th 2012. Meeting 3 was composing revising editing and publishing with leader of students be a scribe. It was done on October 15st 2012. And the last meeting was writing test. It was done on October 16th 2012. The researcher applied the same procedure in Cycle 1 to Cycle 2 meeting 1 which was done on November 5th 2012 was the planning. Meeting 2 which was done on November 6th 2012 was composing revising editing and publishing with the teacher be a scribe. Meeting 3 that was done on November 12th 2012 was composing revising editing and publishing with leader of students be a scribe. And the last meeting which was done on November 13th 2012 was writing test. The finding of the study revealed that shared writing strategy was successful in improving the ability of the ninth graders of SMPN I Pandaan in writing a report text. The number of the students who got score 8805 75 increased from 20 students in Cycle 1 up to 35 students Cycle 2. The percentage of the students participation also increased from 81% in cycle 1 up to 87.4% in cycle 2. And the students response toward the strategy showed positive response with the percentage 86%. Referring to the findings of the study it is suggested to the English teachers to apply shared writing strategy in their writing class in order to provide the students with imteresting learning experiences. For the future researchers who will conduct the same study it is recommended to conduct a study using shared writing strategy with some differences in terms of text types instructional media and the procedure of the presentation of shared writing strategy.
