Improving the speaking skill of the eleventh graders of SMK Negeri 1 Blitar through Youtube videos / Heri Purnomo
Abstrak
Key words Youtube videos improve speaking skill The objective of the study is to improve the students speaking skills through Youtube videos. The strategy is chosen since it allows students to get the ideas to speak practice pronunciation and enrich their vocabulary. Further the strategy has been proven through many studies to have been able to improve the students achievement and participation. The research problem of this study is How can teaching speaking using Youtube videos improve speaking skills of the eleventh graders of SMKN 1 Blitar This study is designed using classroom action research (CAR). The subjects of this study were twenty-seven students of SMKN 1 Blitar of 2012/2013 academic year. This study was conducted in two cycles with the following procedures planning implementing observing and reflecting. Each cycle of the study encompassed three meetings of the strategy implementation and one meeting for speaking test. The data of the study were obtained through the observation checklist field notes and speaking test. The findings of the study revealed that the use of Youtube videos in teaching speaking was successful in improving students speaking achievement that could be seen from the increase of students score. In the second cycle all lower students got the score 6 and all higher students got 7 which has met the criteria of success. The students participation in the activities for each meeting tended to increase. It was pointed that 96% of the students participated actively in the third meeting of Cycle 2 in the teaching leaning process. The procedures in the teaching and learning of the speaking through video Youtube used the following steps (1) showing some vocabulary and questions related to the topic (2) dividing the students into groups (3) sharing the students duty (4) showing the video for watching and listening to get idea to speak while note taking (5) discussing to finish or answer the questions on the worksheet (6) having the students prepare for presentation (7) having students present the information gotten from the video (8) giving the students feedback (9) assigning the students to download the material used in the following meeting and (10) asking students to do reinforcement to practice being a reporter. It is suggested that every English teacher applies teaching speaking using Youtube videos since it is beneficial not only in improving the speaking skill but also in activating the students participation in the speaking class. Finally it is suggested that further researchers employ the findings of this research as reference and conduct further research using Youtube videos for improving the other skills like listening writing and integrated skills especially for SMK students.
