Improving students\' speaking skill through project based learning for second graders of SMPN 1 Kawedanan, Magetan / Sifa Fauziah Permatasari
Abstrak
Keywords Speaking skill Project Based Learning Second Graders of SMPN 1 Kawedanan Magetan. The second graders of SMPN 1 Kawedanan Magetan had limited skill for speaking. They do not have courage to speak in front of the class. Besides that the students are also afraid to make mistakes when they are speaking. Those problems appear because the students had low speaking ability. The last problem is the students do not have specific community which can explore their ability. The main problem is the students shyness to speak English.In line with the background of the study the formulated research problem is How can Project Based Learning improve the speaking skill of second graders of SMPN 1 Kawedanan Magetan This study was classroom action research with the researcher as the teacher. The action research was implemented for two weeks which have five meetings. It was two cycle action research because in the first cycle the researcher had not reached the criterion that had been set for this study. It made the researcher continue to the second cycle. In this cycle the researcher could reach the criterion that had been set before.The second graders of academic year 2012/2013 with the total number of 27 students were the subjects of this study. During the study the researcher implemented Project Based Learning to improve the students speaking skill. The implementation of Project Based Learning could help the students to improve their speaking skill. It proven by reaching the researcher s criteria of success for this study which is has oriented on process and product of teaching and learning. From process of teaching and learning 89% of the students could active participate. The product could be seen from the performance which is 92% of the students reach KKM and the students project which is 100% of the students could reach KKM.This achievement could reach by implementing Project Based Learning with some steps (1) explaining the students about their end product (2) dividing the students into six groups using Numbered Heads Together and each group hasfour or five members (3) giving the students worksheet (4) facilitating the students during teaching and learning and (5) performing the students project in front of the class. From this study some conclusions were drawn. The procedure implemented in the present study improved the students speaking skill. The increasing in students participation students performance and students project during teaching learning activity were the evidences that Project Based Learning was successful to be implemented. The good response of the students during the implementation Project Based Learning was also as an evidence for the successful of this study.
