Implementing spelling bee game through three phase technique to improve the seventh graders\' spelling ability / Rahayu Sekarini

Abstrak
Key words spelling bee writing spelling s aspect Based on the result of preliminary study it was found that the VII-B students writing ability in the aspect of spelling at SMPN 13 Malang was unsatisfactory. Most of the students were not aware of the use of correct spelling in their writing. As a result the students often made mistakes on their spelling when the teacher gave writing assignment whereas the misspelled words can irk their writing. Thus the researcher proposed Spelling Bee game as an alternative game to solve the problems in their spelling. The research problem of this study is how the Spelling Bee game be used to improve the seventh graders spelling ability at SMPN 13 Malang. The limitation of the study is focused on the implementation of Spelling Bee game in improving the students spelling ability. In this study the research design was a Classroom Action Research which consisted of two cycles each of which consisted of three meetings. Each meeting in each cycle consisted of pre-activity main-activity and post-activity. The preliminary study was done to identify the students problem before conducting the first cycle. The second cycle needed to be done because the result of the students spelling in first cycle had not reached the criteria of success since the number of students who used the correct spelling below 75% students. The second cycle was done by doing an improvement on the activity. Each cycle of this study consisted of four steps namely planning the action acting on the plan observing the action and reflecting on the observation. The subject of the study was the 39 students of VII-B of SMPN 13 Malang in the first semester of 2012/2013 academic year. The instrument used to collect data were observation checklist field notes questionnaire scoring rubrics interview guide and the students writing. The data from the observation field note questionnaire and interview were analyzed and the results were reported descriptively. The data gained from scoring rubrics are presented in the form of tables and description. The Spelling Bee game was played individually such as The Hangman game and in group such as Jeopardy game and scrambled words game by using the three phase technique. The games were played in the pre-activity and in the post-activity. The research findings showed that the implementation of Spelling Bee game through the three phase technique effectively improved the students spelling ability. In cycle 1 there was 54% of students use the correct spelling on their writing. Before implementing the second cycle there were some revisions such as set the details rules of the game in terms of the time and replaced the individual game that was the Hangman game with group game that was Scrambled Words game. Thus in cycle 2 there was significant improvement. The result of students writing in cycle 2 showed that 78% of students used the correct spelling on their writing. Besides it could be evidenced from the students positive response to the questionnaire. Based on the result of the questionnaire there were 56% of students were very interested toward Spelling Bee game and there were 0% of the students who were not interested toward Spelling Bee game. Students found that Spelling Bee game could enhance their spelling ability and enjoyment of the teaching and learning process. Furthermore it increased their motivation and awareness toward the use of correct spelling in writing. They also learnt new vocabulary through Spelling Bee game. Thus it can be concluded that the researcher achieved all the criteria of success. In conclusion the implementation of Spelling Bee game can be used to improve the students spelling ability of the VII-B students at SMPN 13 Malang. Therefore it is suggested to the English teachers to implement the Spelling Bee game in teaching and learning process. The further researchers are also suggested to conduct similar studies by using Spelling Bee game in other skills such as speaking listening and reading.
