Gender based differences in compliment and compliment response behavior in American talk show \"The Oprah Winfrey Show\" / Austin Miracle Widya Sari

Abstrak
Keywords Gender differences compliments compliment responses The Oprah Winfrey Show. The present study aims at discussing compliment giving behavior based on different gender which appeared in The Oprah Winfrey Show. Besides it also discusses the compliment responses given by the participants on that American talk show. As this study deals with compliment behavior based on gender differences the samples of this study are all participants (host guest stars audience) both males and females in ten random videos of The Oprah Winfrey Show. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The primary data are taken from the conversation among participants in ten random videos of The Oprah Winfrey Show. In this study the researcher wrote and recorded some conversations which contain compliments and compliment responses given by the participants. Then the researcher categorized the compliment strategies employed by males and females based on Ye s (1995 243) and compliment responses based on Herbert s taxonomy (1986 79). The researcher finds out 153 compliments and 157 compliment responses given by males and females participants in The Oprah Winfrey Show. From those 153 compliments the researcher finds that 61.4% (94 compliments) are offered by females and 38.6% (59 compliments) are offered by males. Furthermore the most common compliment strategy used by both females and males are explicit compliment strategy. There are 43.7% (67 compliments) out of 61.4% (94 compliments) compliments offered by female are explicit compliment strategy while males offered 28.1% (43 compliments) explicit compliment strategy. Meanwhile the most used compliment topic for both males and females is other topic which does not belong to the 4 topics or maybe has mixed topics. This topic usually comments on movies books activities and so forth. There are 39.2% (60 compliment topics) employed by both males and females in giving compliment are included in other topic. In line with compliment giving compliment responses are mostly given by females that is 59.2% (93 responses) while 40.8% (64 responses) are given by males. Moreover the most commonly used response strategies for both genders are the same which is No acknowledgement. Females give 25.5% (40 responses) out of 59.2% responses while males give 21% (33 responses) out of 40.8%. In conclusion firstly females offer more compliment than males do and it is far different between them. Besides both females and males tend to offer compliment to the opposite gender. Secondly both females and males in the present study tend to offer explicit compliments. Lastly both genders employed various strategies in responding to the compliment. Since this research only focuses on the conversation in a talk show it needs improvement from future researchers to conduct study in wider range field of communication to find out whether it has different result. Moreover this research also can be used in giving and responding to the compliment with appropriate strategy. The lecturers of English and personality trainers can also apply this research to teach their students and give information to them as a regard to speech act across gender. Thus they are able to know the differences in men and women talks.
