Using English songs memorization technique to improve the seventh graders\' ,astery of vocabulary at SMPN 7 Malang / Novi Pramita Dewi
Abstrak
Key words English songs memorization vocabulary mastery This study is aimed at improving the seventh graders mastery of vocabulary by using English songs memorization technique in the teaching and learning activity. Based on observation done by the researcher in SMPN 7 Malang on the grade VII-F in the first semester of 2011-1012 the students mostly have problem in memorizing and understanding the meaning of some vocabulary that has been taught by the teacher. They easily forget some new words that the teacher taught and sometimes they do not remember how to pronounce the word even the meaning of it. From the vocabulary test in the preliminary study it was found that only 1 student (2.63%) out of 38 students got 75 while the other 37 students (97.36%) got score below 75 the standard minimum score at the school. The study is classroom action research conducted in two cycles each of which consists of four steps namely planning implementing observing and reflecting. The subjects of the study were 41 students in Grade VII-F of SMPN 7 Malang. The instruments used to collect the data are interview guide observation checklists field notes vocabulary tests and questionnaire. There are several steps made in implementing the English songs memorization technique. The steps are (1) introduce the song by playing the song video and/or singing the song by the teacher (2) ask the students to do listening exercise given in the students worksheet and discuses the answer together (3) lead the students to sing the song line by line until the students could memorize the song and could sing independently and (4) lead the students to sing the song together with several fun supportive activities for example playing games acting out the songs and singing for group or individual competition. From the analysis of the research findings it was found that the students vocabulary mastery increased and met the criteria of success. The vocabulary mastery in this study refers to the students ability to memorize and understand the meaning of vocabulary items from the English songs. From the result of vocabulary test in Cycle I there were 46. 1% (18 out of 39) students who achieved mark higher than or equal to 75 but it is still considered unsatisfactory yet. Then in Cycle II there were 95% (38 out of 40) students who achieved score higher than or equal to 75 and it considered successful. From the observation checklist and questionnaire it was proved that the English songs memorization technique could make the students actively participate in a fun and lively atmosphere of teaching and learning activity in the classroom. Finally the researcher believed that the use of English songs memorization technique could be a beneficial technique to improve the students vocabulary mastery. Thus English teachers are suggested to teach vocabulary by using English songs memorization technique.
