Implementing drilling technique by using wondershare quiz creator to improve the reading ability of the tenth grade students at SMKN 4 Malang / Muhammad Muchlisin

Abstrak
Key words Reading ability Drilling technique Wondershare Quiz Creator Based on the result of a preliminary study conducted to the tenth grade students of SMKN 4 Malang in the second week of January 2013 it was found that the tenth grade students of SMKN 4 Malang in 2012- 2013 academic year had problem in reading ability indicated by the low scores and lack of students participation in the teaching and learning process. Therefore this research was designed to improve the students reading ability through drilling technique by using Wondershare Quiz Creator to solve the students problems. Drilling technique is a technique of teaching in which students carry out training activities in order to have the dexterity or skill that is higher than what is learned. Wondershare Quiz Creator is an offline quiz maker that enables educators trainers and researchers to create interactive flash-based quizzes tests and assessments. The design of this research is classroom action research which consists of planning implementing observing and reflecting. The researcher worked collaboratively with one of the English teachers of SMKN 4 Malang as a collaborator who was involved from the beginning up to the end of the process of the research activities including designing the lesson plan determining the criteria of success implementing the action observing and doing reflection. The subjects of this study were the students of X RPL-C (class C of Software Engineering Department) of SMKN 4 Malang in 2012-2013 academic year. This research was conducted in 1 cycle which comprised four meetings. The results show that the implementation of drilling technique by using Wondershare Quiz Creator in the teaching and learning of reading can improve the students reading ability. It can be identified that after the implementation the action there was an improvement on the number of students who got the score of greater or equal to 75. In the preliminary study there were only 13 students (37.14%) who got scores in good categories ( 8805 75) but after the implementation of this technique there were 31 students (91.18%) who had fulfilled the criteria of success ( 8805 75). The stages in implementing this technique were (1) explaining about the topic through introduction page (2) drilling the quiz based on the topic in every meeting then confirming the result and (3) giving the final test in the last meeting. From the findings it can be concluded that drilling technique by using Wondershare Quiz Creator can be used to improve the students reading ability in the teaching and learning activity. Therefore English teachers are suggested to implement this technique in the reading class. In addition the future researchers are recommended to conduct the research on implementing drilling technique by using Wondershare Quiz Creator which is implemented for different ages and subjects.
