Keywords Cross-linguistic Influence BahasaBanjarHulu (BBH) Banjarese students English spoken utterances phonological errors There had been quite a debate upon the notion of first language influence as the main factor that explained errors the students committed in second language acquisition (SLA). Nowadays however there is an increasing interest and acknowledgment of the influence of first language familiar then as the term Cross-linguistic Influence (CLI) in second language acquisition which help to display that language transfer is at all linguistic levels. Among all the linguistic aspects influenced by first language phonological aspect is considered to be the most obvious. In English phonology phonologists found out that difference in sound systems between English language and native language of the learners can lead to phonological errors as the learners tend to substitute the English features with what is familiar in their native language. In the light of CLI then the researcher conducted research in PondokPesantrenModern DarulIstiqomahPuteri Barabai to investigate the phonological transfer of the students mother tongue BahasaBanjarHulu (BBH) upon their English spoken utterances during speaking. This research uses qualitative study approach with single case study as the research design. In this research the researcher selected fifteen students ranging from eight graders to twelfth graders to be the subjects of the study. There were three data collection procedures used interview participant observation and non-participant observation. In the data analysis data reduction data display and conclusion drawing took place interactively. For data trustworthiness the researcher employed prolonged engagement persistent observation and triangulations which consisted of methodological and data triangulation. The research result showed that the influence of BBH occurred in segmental features such as in vowels diphthongs consonants and clusters and supra-segmental features such as in stress tone juncture and sentence intonation. This research result also hinted that the difference between English sound system and BBH sound system constituted the main considerable factor in the emergence of BBH influence upon the students English utterances followed by other factors such as prior pronunciation instruction sociolinguistic context and learner s attitude and personality while learners age did not play any great role in it. The researcher recommends that the next researcher investigate further how those factors are specifically related. Based on the research results the researcher suggests that English teachers and Language Department in the pesantren pay attention to the influence of BBH upon the students English utterances and have a better control over the progress of their students English language acquisition. In broader area this finding hopefully can be a significant contribution to the studies on Banjarese language by BalaiBahasa Banjarmasin and be a useful input for the Management of better English practice in any pesantren in South Kalimantan.
