Using PQ4R strategy to improve the students\' reading comprehension at SMAN 1 Trenggalek / Endah Ratnawati

Abstrak
Keywords PQ4R strategy Reading Comprehension This study was intended to improve the students reading comprehension of the tenth graders of SMAN 1 Trenggalek using PQ4R strategy. PQ4R strategy employed in this study consisted of six stages namely (1) preview (2) question (3) read (4) reflect (5) recite and (6) review. The research design of the study was a collaborative classroom action research. The researcher as the observer who observed the implementation of the strategy while the collaborator as the teacher who conducted the teaching reading by using the PQ4R strategy. She trained the English teacher on March 27 and 28 2013. While the research was conducted in April 2013 the 2nd semester academic year 2012/2013 at SMA Negeri 1 Trenggalek class X9 that consisted of 32 students. This research was conducted in one cycle for four meetings. The data of this research were obtained through reading test observation checklist and field notes and also students questionnaire about the implementation of the strategy. The improvements of students reading comprehension are indicated with the gain score 80% of the students passed the minimum passing grade 72 and all of the students had ability to identify the main idea and supporting idea of the paragraph. The finding indicated that the PQ4R strategy was successful in improving students reading comprehension especially in narrative text. The improvement can be seen from the increase of students score in the preliminary study and students score in reading test in the end of cycle. From 32 students 12 students can increase their point up to 10 12 students can increase their point up to 4 2 students got the similar score and 3 students cannot increase their score. In the third meeting all the students were able to identify the main idea and supporting idea of the paragraph well. The result of the study indicated that it met the criteria of success so the researcher decided not to continue another action. In line with the findings the conclusions can be stated that using PQ4R strategy can improve the students reading comprehension of the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Trenggalek because this strategy is effective to remember and focus the key information from the text. The implementation of this strategy encompasses several tasks 1) filling the K-W-L column such as write the questions and find the vocabularies 2) finding the main idea and supporting idea of the text 3) filling the story map of the text orientation complication resolution and moral value 4) and reviewing the text by answering the vocabularies tenses and the questions of the text. Following up the findings some suggestions are proposed to the English teachers and the other researchers as well. For the English teachers it is suggested that they implement PQ4R strategy in teaching reading for those who have the same problems with the subject of this study. Furthermore they can implement the strategy not only for narrative text but also for other kinds of text. Besides for the other researchers it is suggested that they carry out a different study on the different skill in different setting. They may also carry out research with different research design.
