Senior High School This present study is conducted to investigate the efforts made by Senior High School (SMA) students for their English achievement. The reason for conducting a study on efforts is based on the fact that efforts have the same degree of importance as intelligence in attributing the students success or failure. Hence the research problems of this study are formulated as follows (1) what efforts do SMA students do for their English achievement (2) what are the patterns of efforts that SMA students make for their English achievement and (3) why do SMA students choose these efforts for their English achievement Along the lines of the objectives of the study this study employs a qualitative descriptive case study. The sites of the research were six Senior High Schools in Nganjuk Regency with three different categories i.e. high average and low category each of which is both state and private schools. The category is based on some criteria decided by the local Office of Education in Nganjuk Regency. The criteria among other things are the school achievement in some academic contests and the quality of the school outputs. The research subjects were thirty six with the three best scores in English in Science and Social Program from grade eleventh from six research sites. The data taken from the questionnaires the observation sheet and the interviews with the research subjects showed that students efforts for their English achievement vary. Students efforts which consisted of three domains i.e. direction duration and intensity had different patterns. Those high achievers from high state school category make more various directions of efforts and spent more time than those from average and low school category both from state and private schools. However from the intensity of efforts the pattern was similar i.e. the students make their efforts intensively focused and joyfully. From the point of the achievement the patterns shows some different paths i.e. students with high efforts have high performance accordingly students with low efforts have low performance. However the result of this study also show that there were research subjects who have low efforts but had good performance and vice versa. The research findings also showed that the reasons the students made those particular efforts were caused by some internal factors they were motivation interest needs and goal structures. Meanwhile the external factors influencing the efforts made by the students were task difficulty teacher s characteristics environment and facilities. Based on the findings some recommendations are put forward. First to the school principals and the school committee. It is recommended that they provide some facilities needed to improve the students English and develop a program enabling students to maximize their English in schools. Second to parents. They have to try not only to facilitate their children to learn and improve their English by providing what they need but also giving support by trying to communicate in English with their children or ask the other members in the family to use English. Third to policy makers it is suggested to hold activities conducted from local up to international level like English debate. It is also recommended to policy makers i.e. Curriculum designers to develop a curriculum enabling the four language skills and language components have the same portion. Ultimately to English teachers as they have a strong role in influencing their students attitude in learning English it is recommended that tasks and assignments be constructed in such a way that students creativity will be explored. Finally for further researchers interested in efforts made SMA students they are suggested to probe some other areas of students efforts like how school programs influence the efforts made by High School students and how low English achievers.
