Grabe and Stoller (2002 9) state that reading is the ability to draw meaning from the printed page and interpret this information appropriately. In this sense readers should have the ability to interpret the information in the text accurately to avoid misinterpretation. Related to the theory of teaching reading comprehension Brown (2007 358) proposed the top-down and bottom-up processing. In bottom-up process readers start to comprehend the text from the low linguistic level (letters morphemes words sentences etc.) to the higher one while in top-down process readers start to comprehend the text from the high linguistic level to the lower one. Brown then suggested combining the top-down and bottom-up approach in teaching and learning process. Similarly the KWLS technique used in this study is the combination of those two approaches. The activities in K and W columns lead students to use their prior knowledge and experience to predict what they are going to find in the text while the activity in the L column guides students to connect or correlate their prior knowledge with the information written in the text. In this study the researcher modified the original KWL technique proposed by Ogle in 1986 by adding S column which stands for summarize since the result of students summary reflects their understanding about the text. Referring to the ninth graders of SMPN 5 Kupang in the academic year 2013/2014 they had a problem in reading comprehension which was indicated by the low scores on their semester examination. It was quite likely caused by the inappropriate technique applied in teaching and learning activities. So the implementation of the KWLS technique is one of the solutions to improve the students reading comprehension ability. Therefore the objective of this study is to describe how KWLS technique improves the reading comprehension ability of the ninth graders of SMPN 5 Kupang. 12288 12288 12288 12288 12288 The method used in this study is classroom action research (CAR) that focused on developing the KWLS technique to solve the classroom problems. The subject of this study is 38 students of the ninth grade (IXD) of SMPN 5 Kupang in the academic year 2013/2014. The instruments of data collection are reading comprehension test items observation checklist field notes and students questionnaire. 12288 12288 12288 12288 12288 The findings of this study showed that the number of students who achieved the criteria of success was improved from 30 (78.75%) out of 38 students in Cycle 1 to 38 (100%) students in Cycle 2. The students participation in the teaching and learning process was increased from 84.08% in Cycle 1 to 94.22% in Cycle 2. In addition all (38) students gave positive perceptions toward the implementation of the KWLS technique. 76.32% of the students are strongly agreed that the KWLS technique could help them comprehend the texts. The appropriate steps of KWLS technique that proved to be successful in improving the students reading comprehension ability from the pre-reading to the post reading are (1) showing pictures to students and asking some leading questions to activate their prior knowledge related to the topic (2) grouping students and distributing KWLS chart (3) asking students to discuss in their group about whatever they have known related to the topic and write their answers in the K column (4) guiding students with questions to explore as many as possible what they want to know or to learn more about the topic and discussing them in their group (5) helping students to construct their sentences or statements into questions and write them in the W column (6) distributing the text to the students and asking them to read (7) asking students to list out what they have learn or found in the text (8) sharing their findings in group and have a discussion with the whole class by referring to the text (9) discussing in detail about vocabulary items or difficult words with the whole groups (10) discussing in detail the whole texts dealing with the main ideas of each paragraph (11) recording all their findings into the L column (12) guiding students to construct their sentences to make a summary about the text in their group using their own words and write them in the S column. 12288 12288 12288 12288 12288 The implementation of the KWLS technique in this study has improved the students reading comprehension ability and increased their participation in the teaching and learning process. So English teachers are suggested applying KWLS technique in the reading class. Also future researchers are suggested that they conduct research on the KWLS technique for different educational levels using different text types.
