Fachrurrazy M.A. Ph.D. Keywords effectiveness of picture writing descriptive paragraph. 12288 12288 12288 The goal of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of using picture in teaching writing descriptive paragraph at junior high school students. 12288 12288 12288 The design employed was quasi-experimental of non-randomized pretest-posttest which was taken from the existing classes. There were 47 students participated in this study. They were divided into two groups 23 students of class VIII F was assigned as the experimental group and 24 students of class VIII G was assigned as the control group. Three instruments were used to collect the data pretest posttest and observation checklist. The result of pre-posttest was analzed by statistical procedures of IBM SPPS 20.0. Statistically the researcher analyzed it using Levene s test and independent t-test. The result of Levene s test for the pretest shows the significant value .496 .05. The result of the homogeneity test shows that the variance between the experimental group and control group were homogenous. 12288 12288 12288 12288 The statistical computation of post-test revealed that there was not significant difference between the two groups. The value of t-test was bigger than the value of minimum level of significance (.230 .05). The result of the analysis reveals that the t value is 1.218 and p value is .230. It indicated that the students who are taught using picture do not have significantly better achievement than those taught with non- picture. In other words in this research the use of picture does not give better impact toward the students writing ability. In short the statistical analysis result shows that there is not enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis. Thus there was not enough statistical evidence to reject the null hypothesis (H0). Thus it can be asserted that the theoretical hypothesis is not supported by the empirical evidence. In the same way to test the hypothesis the researcher conducted the null hypothesis. 12288 12288 12288 The result of the finding was different from the previous study. Therefore the research finding did not support the previous study. The statistical finding shows that the students who are taught using picture do not have significantly better achievement than those taught with non-picture. Azhari (2004) found out the effects of employing picture in teaching writing descriptive paragraph. The previous finding shows that the implementation of picture was successful to improve the students writing ability on descriptive paragraph. In the discussion the researcher discusses about some possible explanation dealing the insignificant result of the experimentation. The first possible explanation is related to the small number of the subjects. Therefore it is not sufficient to see the significant difference. Since the research subjects on every group is less than thirty students. The second possible reason is caused by limited time allotment of the experimentation. Therefore it is not enough to see the effectiveness of the treatment. 12288 12288 12288 From research finding and discussions above it can be concluded that the use of picture in this study is not more effective than non-picture in teaching writing descriptive paragraph. 12288 12288 12288 In order to get the significant level of differences the he researcher delivers some suggestion addressed for the future researcher. First the future researcher may conduct the same experimental research with the larger number of subjects. Second the future researcher should conduct the experimentation with the longer time allotment. Therefore it is expected that the result of the experimentation will be more effective.
