The subjects of the study were 38 fourth semester students in English Department of State University of Malang in the even semester academic year of 2013/2014. Students critical thinking ability was measured by a writing test in the form of argumentative essay test. 12288 12288 12288 The data analysis in this research employed analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). This research revealed the following findings. First the p-value (Sig.) was higher than the level of significance 945 0.05 (0.832 0.05) which means that H01 was accepted. Second the p-value (Sig.) was higher than the level of significance 945 0.05 (0.073 0.05) which means that H02 was accepted. Third the p-value (Sig.) was greater than the level of significance 945 0.05 (0.635 0.05) which means that H03 was accepted. Fourth the p-value (Sig.) was greater than the level of significance 945 0.05 (0.517 0.05) which means that H04 was accepted. In other words there was not significant difference on the students critical thinking ability as shown on the students argumentative writing between students who were taught by using Toulmin s model of argumentation within TWPS strategy and the students who were taught by using Toulmin s model of argumentation without TWPS strategy. 12288 12288 12288 The result of this research showed that Toulmin s model of argumentation within TWPS strategy was ineffective to improve students critical thinking in their argumentative writing. The ineffectiveness was possibly caused by first the history factor in which it refered to the students prior knowledge towards argumentative writing. Second factor was the method used in the control group in which it refered to the application of Toulmin s model using individual writing strategy in the control group. The last factor might be due to the inadequacy number of meetings where there were six meetings during the research excluding pretest and posttest. Therefore the statistical computation revealed that Toulmin s model of argumentation within TWPS strategy was ineffective on improving students s critical thinking ability on argumentative writing. 12288 12288 12288 12288 12288 12288 In accordance to the ineffectiveness of Toulmin s model of argumentation within TWPS strategy on improving students critical thinking ability on argumentative writing future researchers should consider some suggestions. First due to the inadequacy of the number of meetings future researchers should add more meetings to help students to have autonomous learning to think critically by using Toulmin s model of argumentation. Second future researchers should insert a new strategy to improve students critical thinking by using Toulmin s model of argumentation. Moreover it is also suggested to avoid experimenter threat by teaching both experimental and control group.
