Ph.D. Key Words writing competence descriptive text picture card visual materialStrategy Based on the result of the preliminary study it wasfound that the students of VIII-B class of SMPN 18 Malang had problems in writing especially descriptive text. Their problems includedorganizing and developing idea and lacking knowledge of detail in descriptive text. In addition from an interview with the classroom teacher it was revealed that the students had never been taught writing in particular. Thus the researcher conducted a study of using picture card as visual material strategy to solve the problems. Picture card as visual material strategy is a way of teaching writing using picture cards which covers some steps namely naming detailing and comparing. This strategy used in groupsto discuss the picture cards before the students started writing descriptive text through naming detailing and comparing process. Naming is used to name object on picture card the students focus on detailing is used to specify the object with particularity and comparing is used to make the students description more precise. In this study classroom action research (CAR) was employed as the research design. It consists of four steps planning implementing observing and reflecting. The subjects of this study wereVIII-B class students of SMPN 18 Malang. There were 30 students involved in this study. The research instruments used in this study were writing prompt observational checklist field notes and questionnaires.In conducting this research the English teacher helped the researcher in revising the lesson plan and gave advice in the way of teaching. The English teacher also helped the researcher bytaking role as the observer. The research findings show that picture card as visual material strategy increased the students competence in writing descriptive text that from 66.67% students in Cycle I to 90% students in Cycle IIwhich could reach the passing gradeafter the implementation of the strategy.The students were also actively involved in the teaching and learning process which showed that students had good response toward the strategy.They enjoyed continuing writing descriptive text by using the steps naming detailing and comparing. Based on the findings of the research it is suggested for the English teacher to use picture card as visual material strategy in teaching writing especially descriptive text.Further researcher is better to use picture card as visual material strategy to improve writing competencein a class consist of big number of students. Students can use picture cards as visual material strategy when they meet difficulty in writing.
