This study was designed to improve the seventh graders writing ability in English IBL strategy. Thus the research problem was formulated as follows How can inquiry-based learning strategy improve the writing ability of the seventh graders of SMP Laboratorium Universitas Negeri Malang This study employed classroom action research. The subjects of this research were 38 students of VII-I in SMP Laboratorium UM of the 2013/2014 academic year. The research was conducted in two cycles. It followed the procedure of the action research namely planning an action implementing the action observing the action and reflecting the observation. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaires observation checklists field notes and the students final writing. The result of the research showed that IBL strategy can improve the students ability in writing descriptive paragraphs. It consisted of five stages namely asking investigating creating discussing and reflecting. However the researcher elaborated it into some steps. They were (1) engaging students to express their ideas in discussion activities (2) guiding the students to construct some questions related to someone s information (3) guiding the students to investigate or observe the objects (4) asking the students to make notes on what they have investigated (5) engaging them to make outline (6) providing and discussing a model of text (7) drafting rough draft based on the outline (8) revising the drafts (9) conducting proofreading in order to edit the drafts (10) sharing the writing product and (11) reflecting the process of writing. The improvement can be seen on the mean score of the students writing from test on Cycle 1 and test on Cycle 2. The mean score in test 1 was 65.06 and 73.31 in test 2. In addition the students were involved actively during the implementation of IBL. 92% of the students also argued that IBL can improve their ability in writing descriptive paragraph. Based on the findings of the research the following suggestions are proposed. The researcher recommends that the English teachers consider IBL strategy as one of the alternative strategies applied in teaching writing. They also should consider the techniques applied based on the students characteristics the number of the students and the setting of the class. In addition the further researcher(s) should develop the instruments. It is also necessary that a further research be conducted to use IBL for different text types and on different grades and levels of education to see if it can be implemented in solving the students problems in improving students writing ability.
