Using one-stay-two-stray technique to improve the eight graders\' reading comprehension skill in SMP Negeri 5 Malang / Dwi Kartika Sari

However only few students actually have good reading comprehension skill. Based on the preliminary study the researcher found most students in VIII-3 class had difficulty in comprehending text while some others did not. The researcher noticed there was a gap between some students who were good in English and some others who were not. The researcher also found that the students had low motivation to participate in the learning activity. In order to help the students the researcher applied one-stay-two-stray technique that allowed the students to share ideas and knowledge to their friends and gain better understanding in an interesting way. 12288 12288 12288 12288 This study used Collaborative Action Research design. The aim of this study is to solve students reading comprehension skill problem using one-stay-two-stray technique. The subjects were 28 students of VIII-3 in SMPN 5 Malang. The research was done from November 2013 until February 2014. There was one cycle consisting of two meetings. The data were in form of students score in reading test. The research instruments used to collect the data were interview guide observation checklist field notes reading test and questionnaire. The criteria of success was 75%-100% students reached score 78 since 78 is the standard score for English subject in the school. 12288 12288 12288 12288 The result of the data analysis showed that one-stay-two-stray technique improved the students reading comprehension skill. The improvement could be seen from the average score of the test. The average score of the test was 91. There were 100% students reached score above 78. It means that the result of the study met the criteria of success because there were more than 75% students achieved the standard score. The students also became more active and enthusiastic in participating in the teaching and learning process. 12288 12288 12288 12288 In conclusion one-stay-two-stray technique could successfully improve the students reading comprehension skill because the technique provides the students an interesting way to share knowledge and learn actively from fellow friends. It is recommended that the English teachers use one-stay-two-stray technique as an alternative technique in teaching reading since it has been proved to be an attractive way to improve reading comprehension skill. The technique can also be used to make the teaching and learning activity more enjoyable so that the students are motivated to learn. Furthermore it is suggested for the future researchers to conduct researches in different skills and topics using one-stay-two-stray technique.
