ABSTRACT In some schools in Indonesia such as the English depart-ment of IKIPs and the Academy of Foreign Language English Conversation is one of the compulsory subjects for students. In thee schools a good mastery of speaking ability in Eng-lish is important because this is a pre-requisite for the students professional activities in the future. There are many factors that make the mastery of speaking ability in English a difficult goal to achieve. Some of these are (1) English is a foreign language which is not widely used in Indonesia thus students do not have much opportunity to practice their English outside the school (2) most high school students in Indonesia learn English in schools with big classes and only a few English lessons per week thus they do not have much opportunity to practice their English at school and (3) among the four language skills - listen-ing speaking reading and writing - speaking is the most difficult skill to master. In order to discover the media use in the conduct of conversation in the teaching of Eng-lish as a foreign language a survey was conducted in the English Department of IKIP Malang the English Language Centre Malang and the Academy of Foreign Language Malang. Two methods were used in this survey questionnaire and experiment. From the teacher and student questionnaires it was found that in order to facilitate the students in speaking English various activities were conducted during conversation classes in the three schools during the three years of schooling these activities gradually became more complex and demanded more active participation from the stu-dents. In all conversation classes in the three schools there were no varied media used to stimulate conversation activ-ities. Only standard school equipment was used to facilitate the teaching-learning process. From the experiment it was shown that there was no significant difference between stu-dents participation in the media-treatment and non-media-treatment conversation classes. However from the data obtained from the post-meeting questionnaire it was found that most of the subjects of the experiment were in favour of conversation classes with the use of media. They claimed that conversation classes with media were more successful than those without media. Furthermore most of them also stated that the use of media made conversation classes interesting and helped them express themselves in conversational English.
