ABSTRACTS to 1993. ti Study on the Seventh Semester Students of the English Department of Muhammadiyah University af Malang in Comprehendin Reading Texts. Graduate Thesis The Institute of Teacher Training and Education MalangReading is needed not only at the time of study but also in various occupation. In order to be able to keep up withthe development of science and technology a student should read a lot. Meanwhile most vacancies require people who are at least able to understand English texts.Realizing the importance of reading the curriculum constructors of English Department of Muhanmadiyah University of Malang take reading skill as the emphasis of teaching language skill. In this curriculum it is stated thatlanguage skill courses are divided into speaking which consists of Speaking I to V with 10 credits Listening Listening I to IV with 8 credits Writing from Writing I to IV with 14 credits and Reading from Reading I to V plus Extensive Reading with 22 credits. So it is clear that from the number of credits reading has the most.Furthermore the curriculum of the English Department of Muahammadiyah University of Malang also states that reading courses will provide intensive praetices in various reading text narrative descriptive and expository ones ranging from simple to more complex ones which are taken from popular scientifie and literary sources.Considering the great number of credits and the various kinds of reading text used the writer wants to investigate the ability of seventh semester students of English Depart-ment of Muhammadiyah University of Malang in comprehending reading texts that consisted of descriptive narrative and expository texts.The population was the students of seventh semester. In this group there are four parallel classes with 188 students. All students were tested and the answer sheets taken randomly as the sample were 50 pieees from those four classes.As an assessment of reading comprehension this study was to rely on a test whose main and only concern was in reading comprehension. Because of the researchers limitation in constructing a speeial test a selection had to be male of one of the existing tests.In selecting the reading comprehension test to be used in this study a consideration was made as what Pumfrey (in Djiwandono 1982) describes as the most important charac-teristics of reading test are (1) the availability of the test (2) ability to administer the test (3) ability to interpret the results (4) the amount of time required and (5) the possibility to cover ite expenses Finally Lotigman Practice Tests for the TOEFL developed by Philips (1990). was chosen as the instrument of this study. This test consists of listening comprehension structure and written expression vocabulary and reading comprehension test. From those kinds of test only reading comprehension test was selected.The selected reading test consists of 6 passages 2 passages for descriptive text 2 passages for narrative text and 2 other expository ones. Each type of text had 10 multiple ehoice items. So there were 30 items all together.The result showed that the score mean of the ability of the seventh semester students of the English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Malang in comprehending reading texts was 67.22. According to the Grading System of Muhammadiyah University of Malang this level of ability could be considered as fair . It is recommended that the other researchers conduct similar research with more sample and better instrument.
