Is female body institutionalized?: construction of femininity in the movie Barbie: Princess Charm School / Tantry Dhenis Pratiwi
Abstrak

Kukuh Prayitno Subagyo M.A. Keywords body discipline femininity institution Barbie As it was released in 2011 the movie Barbie Princess Charm School has been bringing back the issue on construction of femininity. Through the iconic Barbie doll this movie shows the feminine side of women which has slowly disappeared in this twenty-first century. Women tend to go outside and do job like men do. This study aims at showing the construction of femininity under the surveillance of an institution. It also takes semiotics approach which focuses on the mise-en-scene on the movie Barbie Princess Charm School. The researcher analyzed the frame of images which constitute to the construction of femininity through the disciplinary practices over the body which is conducted by the nstitution. Those selected frames were then elaborated to the theories of construction of femininity stated by Bartky and Foucault s docile bodies. In Barbie Princess Charm School the construction of femininity is well pictured. The female students in Charm School should follow the disciplinary practices in order to achieve high level of femininity. The researcher only focuses on the main character in Barbie Princess Charm School Blair Willows. She is a commoner and has no idea of femininity. Aside from that the participation of societal institution Charm School also plays an important role in constructing the feminine side of women in this movie. Addressing feminist theory from Bartky gaining the femininity needs an effort because femininity is an achievement. Through this study it shows that even in this modern era the idea of being feminine still exists and it will continue. In the end to be feminine or masculine is chosen and it takes efforts yet it is also constructed by the power where we lived. The researcher suggests for the future researcher who wants to analyze the movie Barbie Princess Charm School combine it with Marxist theory. The difference of social class status represented in the movie can affect on how the student absorbs the idea of femininity. For the students of literature they could expand their perspective and knowledge on the modern movie such as the animation movie containing the construction of femininity which leads to the existence of patriarchal system. The researcher also suggests viewers of the movie Barbie Princess Charm School that to achieve femininity is better by doing practices than doing cosmetic surgery.
