An investigation into the effectuveness of extensive listening in teaching of English as a foreign language to third-semester students of the English Department FPBS IKIP Yogyakarta / by Bambang Sugeng
Abstrak
ABSTRACT The experiment tries to compare Extensive Listening and Intensive Listening. A sample of thirty-six students is evenly assigned to the experimental group and control group. Extensive listening is given to the experimental group. Intensive listening is given to the control group. Two hypotheses are constructed stating the experimental group will have higher posttest scores on listening comprehension and total. A TOEPL eouivalent form is used as the instrument to elicit data at the end of the experiment. The data obtained are analysed by using both the descriptive and inferential statistics. The descriptive statistics are used to describe the characteristics of the scores. The inferential statistics are used for hypothesis testing. The descriptive analysis reflects a tendency for extensive listening to be more superior than intensive listening. The inferential analysis dissupports this result stating the difference to be insignificant at the confidence level determined before. Two positions are taken. First it is accepted as fact that extensive listening is not more effective than intensive listening. Second it is suspected that a number of intervening variables interfere with the experimental variable. Necessary recommendations are proposed either to develop or to improve the present research.
