The Teaching of reading comprehension in SMA first grades / Reny Nadeak-Subratha

Abstrak
The present study aims at describing the teaching of Reading III of English Department at SMA first grades on three aspects (1) the materials of reading (2) the methods/ the ways in three phases in teaching reading and (3) the evaluation used in the teaching of Reading III at SMA first grades. The study is conducted using descriptive qualitative research design which is applied to identify and describe the phenomena happening in the natural setting which is the teaching of Reading III of English Department at SMA first grades. In collecting the data the researcher acts as the main instrument. She directly observes the phenomena occurring in the classroom by using other instruments such as observation interview field-notes and documentation. The subject of the study is a Reading teacher of English Department of SMA first grades who teaches Reading III class. The results of study show that in the selection of reading materials the Reading teacher used a Reading III textbook. Besides she used hand-outs The Jakarta Post English Magazine and from the internet. Reading III textbook is selected as the main source in the teaching of Reading III. The textbook is complemented with various tasks/exercises particularly in the whilst-reading and post-reading activities. For post-reading activities are hand-outs provided by the teacher as well. In teaching Reading III the teacher integrates with the other language skills such as listening speaking and writing. In assessment the students progress the Reading III teacher of English Department of SMA first grades performs classroom participation and attendance assignments mid-term test and the final test. Assessment of the teaching of Reading III of English Department at SMA first grades was done in four different ways and kinds of assessment. Four ways of measuring the students works both inside or outside the class are considered to determine the student s score. The kinds of test are Cloze-test multiple choice tests true-false choice subjective tests requiring the students to answer questions related to the text and subjective test requiring the students to find the meaning of words/phrases. Based on the findings the following suggestions are proposed (2) the materials of teaching of Reading III need to be looked through again particularly the sequence of topics. Topics should be arranged from easy to the more difficult ones (2) the objectives of teaching Reading III is better to state clearly in writing objectives of the course particularly the text structures that the students can grasp easily and identify the reading skills that the students are expected to do through assignment and topic presentation (3) the decision in using ongoing assessment or authentic assessment in the teaching of reading.
