In the current century the appropriation of technological platforms which require new approaches for language learning should be fostered to today s youth often referred as digital natives since they are growing up surrounded and immersed in rapid development of technology. Related to language learning understanding communication particularly in foreign language classroom is not a simple task. Today s world requires that the goal of teaching speaking should improve students communicative skills so the students can express themselves and learn how to follow the social and cultural rules appropriate in each communicative circumtances. Using ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in language teaching and learning seems promising to fulfill the demand. One of the media is podcast in which it is an effective medium to help students enhancing their speaking achievement. The present quasi-experimental study with a 2x2 factorial design aimed to investigate the effect of using podcasts on college students speaking achievement across field independent and field dependent styles. This study also attempted to investigate the interaction between teaching media and students cognitive styles. This study was conducted at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang involving 40 fourth semester students. They were assigned into experimental and control groups randomly where the experimental group was taught using podcast while the control group was taught using conventional teaching media. The instruments used to collect the data were speaking posttest cognitive styles questionnaire and interview. To assess students speaking performance in the posttest analytic scoring rubric covering content fluency accuracy on pronunciation grammar and vocabulary was used. The current study employed inter-rater scoring to see the consistency of scores among raters in assessing students speaking performance. The results of statistical analysis using SPSS 23 showed that there was significant difference in speaking achievement between students taught using podcasts and those taught using the conventional teaching media indicated by p value of .003. This finding confirms the previous studies indicating that the use of podcasts is effective in improving students speaking achievement. Further it was also found that there was significant difference between students with field independent style and those with field dependent style in speaking achievement indicated by p value of .0001. However there was no interaction between teaching media and cognitive styles toward college students speaking achievement. Thus the use of podcasts as a teaching medium is promising to help students to improve their speaking achievement in EFL context.
