(II) Dr. Furaidah M.A. Key Words writing narrative picture series genre-based approach This study aimed to increase the ability in writing narrative text of the grade X MIA CI of MAN 1 Bone in the academic year of 2017/2018. This study applied classroom action research (CAR). It was conducted in two cycles from march 29th 2018 to May 5th 2018. The first cycle consisted of four meetings and the second cycle consisted of four meetings also. The procedures of this study consisted of four steps they were planning implementing observing and reflecting. In the implementation learning process was conducted in some steps they were modelling and building of the text during which students identified the generic structure of the narrative text and made an outline based on the picture given Joint construction of text was when students exchanged and revised their writing. Individual construction of text i.e. when students produced their text during the post-test. The subjects of this study were 36 students of Grade X MIA CI of MAN 1 Bone. The data were collected from the students writing scores in the post-test observation checklists questionnaires and field notes. The data were obtained from students final test these data were then analysed to decide whether the criteria were achieved or not. The result of this study showed the improvement of students ability in writing after they were taught using genre-based approach with picture series as the learning media. Students result significantly increased 80% of the students passed the minimum standard of passing grade which was 75 at the end of cycle II. Hence this study-accomplished in two cycles- was a success as it reached in the criterion of success. In sum the use of picture series in increasing the students writing ability through genre-based approach is one of the applicable teaching strategy that significantly increased the students writing ability especially in writing narrative text. Therefore the researcher suggested EFL teachers who faced similar problems that teacher utilized the genre-based approach using picture series in their teaching strategy. Further researchers may conduct further studies regarding the use of picture series in increasing students ability.
