ABSTRACT Sulistyo Teguh. 2018. The Use of Blog Assisted Language Learning to Improve EFL Learners rsquo Writing Performance. Dissertation. The English Language Education Graduate Program Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors (1) Prof. Dr. Nur Mukminaten M.Pd. (2) Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono M.A. P.hD. (3) Prof. Ali Saukah M.A. P.hD. Key Words Blog - Assisted Language Learning EFL Learners writing performance The present study aims at finding out how Blog-Assisted Language Learning (BALL) was implemented in the writing class to what extent BALL improves EFL learners rsquo writing performance and what perceptions students have towards the implementation of BALL in the teaching of argumentative writing. It employs Collaborative Classroom Action Research conducted in three cycles in one semester (16 meetings) which was intended to make improvement in the teaching-learning of writing using BALL since action research is a form of research intended to improve practice on students rsquo learning. BALL was implemented in seven steps (1) setting up a class blog (2) providing text models (3) discussing a topic and activating students rsquo background knowledge in pre-writing activities (4) asking students to compose a text and post it in the blog (5) giving comments on students rsquo drafts and asking the students to give feedback on their classmates rsquo drafts (6) asking students to revise their draft and post their final product in the blog (7) and asking students to read their classmates rsquo final products and give comments. EFL learners made progress related to their overal writing performances covering complexity accuracy and fluency. The data concerning students rsquo writing performances and their perceptions towards the implementation of BALL were collected through a writing test field notes and an open-ended questionnaire which was followed by an in-depth interview. Complexity of the students rsquo writing performance increased from 21.40 to 23.23 (the scores range 0 ndash 30) or the increase was equivalent to 8.55%. Accuracy developed from 13.57 to 14.53 (the scores range 0 ndash 20) or 7.07%. Fluency improved from 40.03 to 43.58 (the scores range 0 ndash 50) or 8.86% and as a whole their average scores raised from 75.00 to 81.35 (the scores range 0 ndash 100) or 8.47% and the statistical computation using Paired Sample t-Test found that the level of significance obtained was .000 and it proved that there was a significant difference between the students rsquo scores before and after the implementation of BALL. In majority students have positive attitudes towards the implementation of BALL in the writing class. BALL encourages them to work harder before publishing and sharing their essays in the blog. Somehow there is a small number of students rejecting BALL due to two reasons lack of self-efficacy and lack of technology savvy. The findings of the study suggest that due to the benefits of BALL and the obstacles dealing with ICT the students might face in the writing class EFL teachers are responsible to train students how to work with BALL before implementing it. Future researchers need to conduct more comprehensible research such as an experimental study investigating whether there is different writing performances among EFL learners who are taught using BALL and those who are treated using a conventional method (eg. Pen and paper-based activities) in writing classes.
