academic context. It is due to its function as major means of production and dissemination of knowledge. However writing an English research article poses challenges for novice writers particularly to second or foreign language learners due to some factors such as limited knowledge of rhetorical structures of particular types of genre. Swales s (1990) Create-a-Research-Space (CARS) model as a common framework to examine the rhetorical moves of introduction sections of research articles was utilized in this study. The principal findings shows that within Move 1 (establishing a territory) reviewing items of previous research is the most frequently steps used followed by making topic generalization . It shows how Indonesian EFL undergraduate students realize the important of reviewing relevant previous researchs to improve the quality of their articles. However it seems like they are still not really proficient in taking benefits of the abundant available previous studies to exhibit the contribution of their research to the development of the body of knowledge. Consequently it makes the previous studies which they reviewed only appeared as the long list of previous studies without clear relevant with their own research. Related to the previous finding within Move 2 (establishing a niche) indicating a gap becomes the most frequent steps employed. However if we compare it with the amount of aforementioned reviewing items of previous research steps in Move 1 it is rather insignificant. It clearly shows the lack of Indonesian EFL undergraduate students competency to deeply analyze the existing previous studies to link and establish the significant of their research among the others. Another important finding is related to Move 3 (occupying the niche). Announcing present research steps comes out as the most frequent steps manifested followed by outlining purposes . It represents the awareness of the Indonesian EFL undergraduate students to some extent to provide description about their research to increase the readers interest about their research article. vi It can be concluded that the rhetorical moves of the introduction sections of English research articles written by Indonesian EFL undergraduate students to some extent both conform to and depart from those expected or practiced in the broader context of international discourse community. Finally it is suggested that for novice writers particularly university students to treat the significant findings of this research as a guideline on how to write research article introduction which closely followed what it acceptable in international context. It could also provide considerable information for the lecturers about to what extent rhetorical awareness should be explicitly brought and effectively taught in the Writing and Research courses. For the thesis or even dissertation advisors this research could also give more information regarding their students weaknesses in writing introduction section in research articles and what to do to overcome that as well as being a good guideline for all people who want to write an introduction section good enough to be published in reputable international journals.
