Ali Saukah M.A. Ph.D. Key Words mobile-assisted language learning degree of implementation MALL Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) has become a trendy topic in English Language Teaching that catches the attention of language teachers and researchers. MALL is considered a positive breakthrough in language teaching and learning. It is believed that by implementing MALL positive outcomes could be obtained by both teachers and students. In implementing MALL the role of the teachers is very essential. Teachers need sufficient content pedagogical as well as technological knowledge. However the information on the amount of time spent by the teacher in implementing MALL the frequency of the implementation and the variety of learning activities have not been extensively investigated. This study aimed to describe the degree of the implementation of MALL by English teachers in senior high schools. The quantity and the quality of MALL implementation by teachers could indicate their readiness in utilizing mobile devices in class. Three English teachers from different senior high schools were chosen based on a screening process as the research subjects. The descriptive study was carried out to answer the research problem To what extent do English teachers with different degree of implementation employ MALL in their teaching To answer the question multiple interviews were conducted. The study started with a screening to determine the teachers who were going to be chosen as the subjects of the study. The selection process was done in stages. In the screening process a short interview was carried out to 12 English teachers. The results of the interview were tabulated quantitatively in a form of percentage representing three degree of MALL implementation high medium and low. Three teachers were selected from each category of MALL implementation as the main research subjects. Guided interviews with open-ended questions were then conducted to the selected teachers. In order to validate the teachers answers their students were also interviewed. The interview was also useful for strengthening the obtained data. The results of this study show that the teachers in high medium or low degree of MALL implementation are all familiar with MALL concepts and theories. However more various learning activities are required to maximize the implementation of MALL since most of the learning activities conducted appeared to be the simple ones such as accessing the online dictionary or finding references on the Internet. Regarding the results of this study it is suggested that professional development programs such as workshops seminars or training programs could be held to raise more awareness and increase more skills to enhance the implementation of MALL. Further research is suggested to take into account other variables that are involved in MALL implementation such as iii broader perspectives that come from parents school principals or other stakeholders. Researchers could also explore a topic on how to create or to design a learning activities integrated with MALL for English teachers.
