iv SUMMARY Larasati Ratna Sari. 2018. Psychoanalytic View The Savagery of the Main Character Jack Merridew in the Novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Thesis Department of English Faculty of Letters Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors (I) Inayatul Fariha S.S. M.A. (II) Dr. Johannes Ananto Prayogo M.Pd. M.Ed. Keywords Savagery Character Jack Lord of the Flies William Golding Authors in any literary work express their languages and styles to deliver messages and each one has specific way to express it. There are a lot of studies about how characters in a literary work portray the psychology of human which later can be developed as a key to understand the actual purpose of the work. One of them is the savagery in children. Lord of the Flies by William Golding is one of the outstanding works in literary history. It is a dark speculative fiction story about a group of British boys 6-12 years-old trying to survive in an abandoned island where they suddenly changed to be a bloody savagery. The aims of this study are to find Jack Merridew s personalities where stranded in the island and factors that make him turn into a savage chief. Using Psychoanalytic approach this study provides explanation on how a 12 year-old main character in the Lord of the Flies Jack Merridew is viewed as savagery. This study only focused on Jack s personalities during in the island and factors that shaped Jack into a savage. Considering the collected data from the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding 1954 I applied psychoanalysis characters in fiction and personality development to analyze Jack s character. The results show (1) Jack s personalities in the island are represented as manipulative arrogant violent hypocrite controlling aggressive and lying and (2) the possible factors that affect Jack turns into a savage are the trauma from the plane crash that he had been through during a war. In addition the lack of empathy such as killing pigs because it is fun threatening his fellow littleuns and ordering to kill Piggy and no parents figure in the novel are also some factors that shape him into savagery It can be concluded that a person could turn into a savage from a deep trauma and the surroundings that encourage the person to do such behavior. Finally it is suggested that the study can be a social criticism to pay more attention about abandoned child syndrome and savagery in children. For English Literature students it is suggested that they find more definitions of psychoanalysis and personality in characters concept as a tool in analyzing the social phenomena (savagery) in this study. It is also suggested that future researchers collect more information about personality development and savagery in children.
