Key Words learner autonomy English proficiency EFL students This study aims to find out the relationship between learner autonomy and English proficiency of EFL students in Universitas Negeri Malang. There has been a growing interest in learner autonomy mainly because learner autonomy in students can help them develop their life-long learning. In addition learner autonomy in language learning can help the students to master the language they learn. In this study learner autonomy describes the students involvement in the aspects of their learning including determining the objectives defining the contents and progress selecting the methods and techniques monitoring the acquisition progress and evaluating what has been done. The research design is correlation. Learner autonomy is the X variable and English proficiency is the Y variable. Questionnaire was used to measure the students learner autonomy and IC GPA was used to measure the students English proficiency. Spearman s Rho was applied to find out the relationship between the students learner autonomy and English proficiency. The subjects of this study were the second semester EFL students in Universitas Negeri Malang. The second semester students were chosen because they have received their IC GPA in the first semester. The samples were taken by using simple random sampling. There were seven classes in total. In each class ten samples were taken. The result demonstrates that there is a moderate significant correlation between learner autonomy and English proficiency of EFL students in Universitas Negeri Malang.. It can be concluded that the students with higher level of learner autonomy are benefited in terms of having higher English proficiency. The result of this study is expected to inform the readers about the importance of learner autonomy in foreign language learning including English. The recommendation for future teachers is the teacher should help the students enhance their learner autonomy. The recommendation for future researchers is to include subjects from non-English majors or students from different universities.
