Andi Muhtar M.A. Keywords Vocabulary Mastery Narrow Reading and Extensive Reading. Vocabulary is a fundamental component which is rarely taught by English teachers. Students are expected to improve their vocabulary by themselves without any guidance. In order to achieve a great result in language proficiency and be able to communicate well in a foreign language students should master their vocabulary skill and have a sufficient number of vocabulary. They also have to understand how to use the words correctly. The purpose of this study is to improve the tenth grade students vocabulary mastery in SMAN 1 Sooko Mojokerto East Java. The researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) design based on Kemmis and McTaggart (1988). There were 4 steps in this method that is planning implementing observing and reflecting. The research subjects were 32 tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Sooko in the second semester of 2018/2019 academic year. The researcher used 4 kinds of instruments. They are interview guide questionnaire observation sheet and vocabulary test. This study is considered successful if 75% of the students pass the minimum passing grade which is 75. The findings of the study showed that there is an improvement in tenth grade students vocabulary mastery. It is proven by the students score and percentage of how many students passed the criteria of success. The students response toward the implementation of the strategy was good. The students claimed that the strategy helped them to master their vocabulary from the book. The improvement of students vocabulary achievement was shown through the increasing number of students who passed the passing grade. Before the implementation there were 6 students or 18.75% who passed the passing grade which is 75. After implementing the strategy the numbers of students who were successful increased that is 26 students or 81.25% and passed the criteria of success. All students had collected their vocabulary from 25 up to 30 words. The conclusion of this study is that implementing narrow reading in extensive reading strategy could improve tenth grade students vocabulary mastery.
