vi SUMMARY Kirana Dhinuk Puspita 2019. Lexical Bundles in Applied Linguistics Research Articles Native and Non-Native Writers. Dissertation Graduate School in ELT Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Dr. Yazid Basthomi MA. (II) Prof. H. Moh. Adnan Latief MA. Ph.D. (III) Dr. Suharmanto M.Pd. Keywords Lexical bundles applied linguistics native and non-native corpus-based study The current dissertation was a corpus-based investigation of the frequency structural and functional categories of lexical bundles in the corpora of Applied Linguistics articles written by native and non-native English writers. The objective was to examine how native and non-native writers in the same discipline Applied Linguistics use the lexical bundles in their academic articles structurally and functionally. Four-unit formulaic bundles were extracted from one million word corpus of AL-ENG (Applied Linguistics articles written by native English writers) and one million word corpus of AL-IND (Applied Linguistics articles written by non-native English/ Indonesian writers). The results showed that the majority of lexical bundles used by native English writers were in noun phrase and prepositional phrase. On the other hand Indonesian writers use lexical bundles in noun phrase and prepositional phrase lower than that of the native English writers. Furthermore Indonesian writers use lexical bundles in the structure of verbs and clause fragments (especially in passive verbs structures) higher than that of native writers. It was found out that the structural and functional distinctions of lexical bundles between native and non-native writers continue to happen at professional level. This finding indicates that it is not as simple as a matter of novice or expert or a matter of native and non-native but it is possible that native English obviously has an important and distinctive ability in developing this discourse styles and put them in application. In addition the influence of L1 in L2 acquisition should also be taken into account when dealing with English acquisition by non-native English. Therefore it seems undeniable that native novice writers and non-native novice writers must pay attention to the importance of appropriate use of lexical bundles in their academic writing. This study has potential pedagogical implications for teaching EAP (English for Academic Purposes).
