Keywords ABR wastewater Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Untreated wastewater can cause pollution and a direct impact on aquatic biota in the river if it is not treated according to the required quality standards. Wastewater treatment can be done through a communal wastewater treatment plant (CWTP) or instalasi pengolahan air limbah (IPAL in Indonesian) using Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR) technology which aims to reduce the negative impact in the environment. To improve ABR performance an Up-flow Anaerobic Filter (UAF) can be added for the screening process. The study was conducted by taking wastewater from the ABR inlet in Al-Umm Islamic Boarding School of Malang. The wastewater was flowed into a container equipped with a mixer and then the wastewater was flowed to the lab-scale ABR with a peristaltic pump. The raw wastewater went through the ABR process in several compartments with the addition of natural filter media such as palm fibers sand and gravel. The lab-scale ABR reactor made from an acrylic material consisting of inlet the size of the second compartment with the addition of a hanging baffled was 31.25cm x 18.75cm x 50cm and the third compartment was filled with a woven palm fiber with compartment size of 31 25cm x 18.75cm x 50cm. The size of the fourth and fifth compartments were of 31.25cm x 18.75cm x 50cm and 8.75cm x 25cm x 50cm respectively with the thickness of filter media for 26.25 cm. The water flew in U-shape flow pattern with a residence time of 24 hours. This treatment system was excellent in reducing 78% of TSS 89% of Ammonia and 74% of Total Coliform. But for the parameters of BOD COD Ammonia and Total Phosphorus were above the standard quality of domestic wastewater. The average results obtained were pH 7.25 Temperature 30.38 DO 1.26 mg/L BOD 75 mg/L COD 243 mg/L TSS 20 mg/L Ammonia 64 mg/L TP 7 35 mg/L and TC 535 MPN/100ml.
